Description of the Ranchu Goldfish

The Ranchu Goldfish is also known as the 'Buffalo Head' and can be recognised by its lack of dorsal fin, egg shaped body and a large growth on its head which is thought to resemble a bunch of grapes! It's not recommended for beginners as this particular variety of fancy goldfish is not as hardy as others. The Japanese call the Ranchu Goldfish  'The King of Goldfish' and it can be found in a variety of colors including Red, Orange, White, Chocolate, Black, Red and Black, Red and White and occasionally Yellow.

Ranchu Goldfish secrete a type of mucus, or slime, from their skin. This slime provides protection against parasites and infections and helps the Ranchu Goldfish to move through the water faster. Some fish species also release toxins in their slime which ward off enemy attacks. Other fish species use their slime to feed their young.

Gills enable the Ranchu Goldfish to breathe. Gills consist of thin sheets of tissue containing blood vessels. As water passes over the gills oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream Carbon dioxide passes out into the water. The gills are protected by a large bony plate called an operculum. Some fish species however have lungs and breathe air.
